今年(2002年)１月の最初の週にＭＥＧＡＤＥＴＨはテキサス州にいましたが、 私は怪我をし、 左腕と手に重大な神経障害を負いました。その怪我は末梢神経機能障害と 診断されました。特に圧縮された放射状神経の機能障害です。 主治医によると完治するのには 約１年かかるとのことですが、たとえ１年経過しても完全に治るかどうかは分かりません。 私は日々、 素晴らしいチームドクター達と一生懸命治療に当たっていますし、いつの日か、 またギターが弾けることを願っています。

左腕の治療に専念している間、私はこの機会を 自分のキャリアと将来を見直すことにしようと思っています。さしあたって私はＭＥＧＡＤＥＴＨ を 脱退すること、またギターを弾けなくても私が貢献できるかもしれない他の音楽ビジネスの エリアを探索することを決意しました。

ＭＥＧＡＤＥＴＨにいた時は、歌ったりギターを 弾くことで素晴らしい時間をすごしました。私は多くのゴールドディスクやプラチナディスク、 そしてマルチ・プラチナディスクなどに対して、本当にその受賞をうれしく思っています。 また、長年にわたり、ファンの方々を含め、 皆様には過去も現在も愛情を捧げてくださった ことに感謝しています。

現在の私のゴールは、このひどい状況から、いかに良いものをつくり だしていくかということです。まず最初に、私は妻や二人の子供のために この機会を使いたいと 思っています。彼らには、これまで以上に私のエネルギーや配慮をしてあげる時間を与えたいの です。妻のＰａｍは、私がスタジオや ワールドツアーに出ていた時、素晴らしい仕事をしてくれ ました。私がゴールドやプラチナ賞に値する父親であったかといえば、それは程遠いものだった のです。 だからこそ私は、ぜひともそのような父親になるよう、今からスタートしたいのです。

最後にＹＯＵＴＨＡＮＡＳＩＡのレコードで、私がつづった美しいフランス語と共に出発したいと 思います。「Ａ　ＴＯＵＴ　ＬＥ　ＭＯＮＤＥ」。この曲の歌詞の一節である

全世界とすべての友人へ　愛しています　私は行かなければなりません」

これを私のメッセージとします。
